Allergies and anaphylaxis

Awareness

At our school, we are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all pupils, including those with allergies. We recognise that some allergies can be life-threatening, and we take every precaution to reduce risk and respond effectively in an emergency.

Our Approach

We are an allergy-aware school and we:

  • Support pupils with food and non-food allergies
  • Maintain up-to-date Allergy Action Plans for affected children
  • Ensure all relevant staff are trained to recognise and respond to allergic reactions
  • Promote awareness and understanding amongst pupils

We work closely with parents to ensure children are safe at school. Parents and carers are asked to:

  • Inform the school of any allergies as soon as possible
  • Provide an up-to-date Allergy Action Plan from a healthcare professional
Supply prescribed medication (e.g. adrenaline auto-injectors) in date and clearly labelled
  • Keep the school informed of any changes

Managing allergies in school
To help reduce risk, we:

  • Keep a register of pupils with allergies
  • Share essential information with relevant staff
  • Follow safe practices in classrooms and around food
  • Work with catering staff to manage allergens safely
  • Carry out risk assessments for school trips and activities

Emergency procedures
All staff are trained to respond to allergic reactions. In the event of a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), staff will:

  • Follow the child’s Allergy Action Plan and administer an adrenaline auto-injector if required
  • Call emergency services immediately
  • Contact parents/carers
